{"id":241,"date":"2017-10-30T14:44:04","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T14:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sacpsr.org\/?page_id=241"},"modified":"2017-10-30T15:05:32","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T15:05:32","slug":"2014-contest","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/index.php\/essay-contest\/past-contests\/2014-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"2014 High School Scholarship Essay Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">PSR\/Sacramento congratulates winners of the<br \/>\n2014 Scholarship Essay Contest<\/h3>\n<p>The prompt for the 2014 contest was a quotation from the late South African leader and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Nelson Mandela, who said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ten finalists in the 2014 contest energized an enthusiastic audience of 150 people with their idealism and their passion as they presented their essays orally and answered questions from a distinguished panel of judges at the scholarship essay contest finals dinner on April 27 in Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Place &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Bere-Lucas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lucas Bere<\/a>, Rio Americano High School, Sacramento<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second Place &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Watkins-Zaria.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zaria Watkins<\/a>, Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third Place &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Filet-Nora.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nora Filet<\/a>, Davis Senior High School, Davis<\/p>\n<p>The other finalists were:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Chen-Courtney.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Courtney Chen<\/a>, Franklin High School, Elk Grove<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Coates-Anthony.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Coates<\/a>, Antelope High School, Antelope<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-DiPentino-Rosemarie.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosemarie DiPentino<\/a>, Woodcreek High School, Roseville<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Foley-Brittany.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brittany Foley<\/a>, Elk Grove High School, Elk Grove<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Grove-Elisabeth.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elisabeth Grove<\/a>, C.K. McClatchy High School, Sacramento<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Moylan-Alice.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alice Moylan<\/a>, Davis Senior High School, Davis<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sacpsr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2014-EC-Taylor-Benjamin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benjamin Taylor<\/a>, Franklin High School, Elk Grove<\/p>\n<p>The first place finalist won a $3000 scholarship, second place a $2500 scholarship, and third place a $2000 scholarship. The other seven finalists each won $1000 scholarships and two alternate finalists $250 each. Read their essays by clicking on their names. The first, second, and third place finalists were chosen by a panel of judges from the community: Ayad Al-Qazzaz, CSUS Sociology professor; Stella Levy, founder and president of the Restorative Justive Vision Project; The Hon.
